Quilt Shopping List

From Quilting For Dummies, 2nd Edition by Cheryl Fall

Much of the fun of starting a new quilt comes from planning the shopping trip to get the supplies you need. Even if you’re using fabric scraps you already have, you may need to find some complementary material, and you’ll probably need backing and batting at least. Use the following list as a reminder of all the ingredients that go into a finished quilt:

  • Quilt pattern of choice
  • Fabrics for your quilt
  • Batting for the filler
  • Backing fabric that’s 2–3 inches larger all around than the finished quilt size
  • All-purpose thread for piecing and assembly
  • Specialty threads for appliqué projects
  • All-purpose or monofilament thread for machine quilting
  • Fabric scissors (dressmakers’ shears are perfect)
  • Rotary cutter, ruler, and self-healing mat for rotary-cut patterns
  • Thimbles and finger protectors for hand quilting
  • Quilting hoop or stand for hand quilting
  • Walking or even-feed foot for machine quilting
  • Free motion foot (darning foot) for free motion quilting
  • Templates for hand or machine quilting
  • Enough bias quilt binding to go completely around the quilt plus 6 extra inches for overlap
  • Quilters’ pins
  • Glue stick for holding appliqués in place
  • Seam ripper and needle threader, just in case

 TIMELY TIPS

The only thing I really dislike about prewashing my quilting fabrics is all the strings that come loose during the wash. The threads twist and pull at the fabric when they get tangled up in the wash, and you have to remove them before they go into the dryer so that fabrics come out wrinkle-free. Neglect to remove the threads and you’ll see oodles of accordion pleats when you take fabrics out of the dryer –folds that aren’t always easy to press flat. It’s easy to eliminate nearly all of the strings. Just clip off a little triangular section from each corner of fabrics before you wash them. Try about 1/2″ or a little less. You’ll still see a bit of fraying, but not enough to create bunches of knots. Give it a try the next time you prewash your quilting fabrics — the little snip really makes a difference.

Till next month,

Happy Sewing!

TIMELY TIPS

To get your backing and batting smooth when you are using a spray baste roll your batting onto a dowel (about 1.5″ in diameter). Then tape your backing down to a flat surface (I use the floor) spray the backing lightly on the end and place the end of the batting on the backing and spray and roll it onto the backing. No wrinkles to fight with and try and smooth out. – Donna in Scappoose

TIMELY TIPS

Tip for storing quilts. Go to the Dollar Tree and get some noodles. Not talking Pasta here, but those toys that look like a colorful foam tube that you use in the pool. Yeah, a swim noodle. Anyway, you can roll the quilt up on one of these and store it under your bed and not worry about fold wear and wrinkles.

Till next month,

Happy Sewing!
